Wild Times at The Win Or Swim, Tar River Around The Corner

For those of you that did not attend the Luther Britt Win Or Swim II in Lumberton, NC this past weekend, you missed the tournament of a lifetime. We had 49 people compete in the event this past weekend and all in attendance will agree that this was an event that none of them will ever forget.

Day one stated out with all 49 people competing on the 19 hole temp layout consisting of the dreaded “X” hole. After a smooth first round is when things started to get interesting. About half a dozen holes into the second round, a pickup backed up on the green of hole number 5 and proceeded to unload flowers and chairs for a wedding. It seems that the park had double booked the “green” for a wedding and a disc golf tournament! Well I guess we all know that will not work. After talking with the wedding party, I decided to make a tournament adjustment and let the 4 of the 6 divisions that had not played hole 5 to skip it and proceed as normal.

Moving into day two there was still a buzz in the air about the previous days “wedding events” with a lot of jokes being bounced around as to what was to proceed yesterday’s events. If we only knew. After 2 uneventful rounds of golf on Sunday we proceeded to prepare for the awards ceremony with the Moe’s Southwest Grill Ring of Fire and the Knowledge Vector Ace Pool Throw off. During the ace pool throw off is where the previous days events were surpassed. On a dock about 200 feet out in the lake we were having the throw off next to, a group of boys started yelling for help. One of the boys swimming in the group had gone under water and not resurfaced! With out hesitation Matt Wallbrown, Adam Morris, John Beckwith, and Melisa Memoli rushed into the lake to save the boys life. By the time Matt had reached the boy he had been underwater for well over two minutes! Matt brought the boy to the surface and started moving him to shore. While Matt was working his way to shore, Adam assisted him in getting the boy to solid ground and John climbed on the dock to keep the other boys from jumping in and adding to the mayhem. Melissa, a RN, helped Matt and Adam clear the boy’s lungs of water and proceeded to resuscitate him while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. Based on the way the few other adults around were watching instead of acting, the boy would not be alive today if it was not for the fast selfless actions of our disc golfers.

While I can’t promise that future Spike Hyzer events won’t have affairs of this magnitude, I can assure you that they will be FUN and REWARDING. While those of you that did not attend the Win or Swim are not eligible for the Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge, there is still plenty of incentive to attend the Tar River Hoedown. Like all of the 2010 Spike Hyzer PDGA events, this is a “B” tier event with the added cash being split between the Pro and Amateur divisions. For those of you that did attend the first Spike Hyzer event at Luther Britt, don’t forget about the benefits of the Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge. The winner of the Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge will receive prizes based on the division they are playing in. The open winner will receive $200 in cash, master $100 in cash, advanced $150 in Spike Hyzer merchandise, intermediate men $105 in Spike Hyzer merchandise and rec men and women $90 in Spike Hyzer Merchandise. There will be one winner per division.

I have had 12 people pre register today for the Tar River Hoedown, and with the “buzz” going around about the tour, I anticipate this event to fill up. For those of you that pre register you will be entered in a drawing to win a cooler competition bag. The drawing will be held after the final round of the Sanford Slingers Fall Fling. So go ahead and pre register to play one of the best private courses in the state in one of the best PDGA tour events in the country.

See ya ’round
