I am proud to announce that I will be running the 25th Annual Sneaky Pete Classic this year in Burlington, NC. Once again it will be a “B” tier sanctioned event utilizing Well Springs and Cedar Rock DGC as well as the ever so famous temporary course. The format will change a little this year going from 4 rounds to 3 round with a 4th round finals for several of the divisions. The 3 and a half round format is being used this year to try and make the final day as efficient as possible and still allow all of the fields to play the much longer and tougher “Temp Course”.

On line registration will start at 12 a.m. July 6th, at DiscGolfUnited.com. I chose Disc Golf United for pre registration due to the fact that they have a lower on line registration fee which helps keep surcharges to a minimum. For those of you wanting to pay by check you can mail a check made payable to Spike Hyzer at the address listed on the bottom of this email. I strongly encourage everyone to pre register for this event, and as an added incentive for pre registration, I will be having a drawing after the event. Every one that pre registers will be entered into the drawing to win a FREE SPIKE HYZER DISC GOLF BAG!

There will be a player’s package consisting of a T shirt with some awesome artwork on it representing the 25th anniversary of the Sneaky Pete Classic. We are keeping the value of the player’s package at a minimum allowing us to still have a good payout for all of the fields in competition. As another bonus, I will be supplying the payout merchandise this year for the Sneaky Pete. You can expect the awesome selection of merchandise you have grown accustomed to seeing at Spike Hyzer events to choose from with your winnings. There will also be a lot of new merchandise released at the Sneaky Pete, allowing the field of competitors first choice of the HOT NEW SPIKE HYZER apparel and disc golf accessories.

I look forward to running this wonderful event and will keep you posted on further developments of the 25th Sneaky Pete Classic.

See ya’ ’round

For those of you that did not attend the Luther Britt Win Or Swim II in Lumberton, NC this past weekend, you missed the tournament of a lifetime. We had 49 people compete in the event this past weekend and all in attendance will agree that this was an event that none of them will ever forget.

Day one stated out with all 49 people competing on the 19 hole temp layout consisting of the dreaded “X” hole. After a smooth first round is when things started to get interesting. About half a dozen holes into the second round, a pickup backed up on the green of hole number 5 and proceeded to unload flowers and chairs for a wedding. It seems that the park had double booked the “green” for a wedding and a disc golf tournament! Well I guess we all know that will not work. After talking with the wedding party, I decided to make a tournament adjustment and let the 4 of the 6 divisions that had not played hole 5 to skip it and proceed as normal.

Moving into day two there was still a buzz in the air about the previous days “wedding events” with a lot of jokes being bounced around as to what was to proceed yesterday’s events. If we only knew. After 2 uneventful rounds of golf on Sunday we proceeded to prepare for the awards ceremony with the Moe’s Southwest Grill Ring of Fire and the Knowledge Vector Ace Pool Throw off. During the ace pool throw off is where the previous days events were surpassed. On a dock about 200 feet out in the lake we were having the throw off next to, a group of boys started yelling for help. One of the boys swimming in the group had gone under water and not resurfaced! With out hesitation Matt Wallbrown, Adam Morris, John Beckwith, and Melisa Memoli rushed into the lake to save the boys life. By the time Matt had reached the boy he had been underwater for well over two minutes! Matt brought the boy to the surface and started moving him to shore. While Matt was working his way to shore, Adam assisted him in getting the boy to solid ground and John climbed on the dock to keep the other boys from jumping in and adding to the mayhem. Melissa, a RN, helped Matt and Adam clear the boy’s lungs of water and proceeded to resuscitate him while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. Based on the way the few other adults around were watching instead of acting, the boy would not be alive today if it was not for the fast selfless actions of our disc golfers.

While I can’t promise that future Spike Hyzer events won’t have affairs of this magnitude, I can assure you that they will be FUN and REWARDING. While those of you that did not attend the Win or Swim are not eligible for the Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge, there is still plenty of incentive to attend the Tar River Hoedown. Like all of the 2010 Spike Hyzer PDGA events, this is a “B” tier event with the added cash being split between the Pro and Amateur divisions. For those of you that did attend the first Spike Hyzer event at Luther Britt, don’t forget about the benefits of the Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge. The winner of the Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge will receive prizes based on the division they are playing in. The open winner will receive $200 in cash, master $100 in cash, advanced $150 in Spike Hyzer merchandise, intermediate men $105 in Spike Hyzer merchandise and rec men and women $90 in Spike Hyzer Merchandise. There will be one winner per division.

I have had 12 people pre register today for the Tar River Hoedown, and with the “buzz” going around about the tour, I anticipate this event to fill up. For those of you that pre register you will be entered in a drawing to win a cooler competition bag. The drawing will be held after the final round of the Sanford Slingers Fall Fling. So go ahead and pre register to play one of the best private courses in the state in one of the best PDGA tour events in the country.

See ya ’round

The first event of the Spike Hyzer Developmental PDGA Tour at Luther Britt Park in Lumberton, NC is this weekend. If you are attending and have not pre registered please contact me via email or phone to make me aware of your attendance to help keep things as organized as possible.

We have already exceeded last years attendance with pre registration and it is looking like we are going to have a great field of golfers in attendance this weekend. Remember that this is a “B” tier event with almost $900 in added cash. Also keep in mind that the added cash for this event will be split between the amateur and professional divisions 30/70. Based on the current registration payout is looking sweet for the amateur divisions and is sure to increase with same day registers adding more to the mix. Currently first place advanced will win $170 in prizes, 1st place Intermediate will take home $115 and 1st place Rec Men is bidding for $114. These numbers are sure to increase as more people register for the event.

Remember that there is an inner division competition for seven divisions called the “Capital Bank Lowest Score Challenge”. To qualify you must attend all 3 Spike Hyzer Tour events and be in one of the seven divisions that are part of the challenge. The qualifying divisions are: Open, Master, Advanced, Advanced Master, Intermediate Men, Recreational Men and Recreational Women. The winner of each divisional challenge will be determined by adding the total scores from all three events and the person with the lowest score will win the challenge. In the case of a tie a playoff will in-sue after the final round of the Sanford Slingers Fall Fling at OT Sloan to determine the division winner. There is a cash prize for the open divisions and Spike Hyzer merchandise for the amateur divisions.

For those of you that are planning on camping out this weekend for the event I recommend Sleepy Bear Camp Ground in Lumberton, a sponsor for the Win or Swim for the past two years. They are offering club rates for people attending the tournament. I am camping there in a pop up with 2 other people and it is only $28 a night. For more info and to make a reservation call Sleepy Bear at 910-739-4372.

Remember that after the 4th round on Sunday before the awards ceremony we will be having the Moe’s Southwest Grill Ring of Fire. There will be many prizes to be won at the ring of fire and it will help kill time while we prepare for the awards ceremony, so warm up your putter and get ready for the RING OF FIRE!

See ya there!

The Spike Hyzer Developmental PDGA Tour is due to start in just 2 weeks and with the cancellation of the Tupelo Bay event in Myrtle Beach the Luther Britt Win Or Swim II in Lumberton is starting to fill up at an alarming rate! I have had 17 people pre-register in the past 4 days, so hurry and add your name to the list before the event fills up. You can go to www.PDGA.com to register online or download the pre-registration form from the Spike Hyzer website and mail it to Chuck Connelly at 303 S. Horner Blvd. Sanford, NC 27330. Please make sure to include the appropriate amount of money with your application to cover your divisional entry fees. Remember, that for every Spike Hyzer PDGA event you pre-register for, your name will be entered in a drawing to win a Spike Hyzer disc golf bag. The drawing for the bag will be held after the final round of the Sanford Slingers Fall Fling III. Now on to the juicy stuff about the Spike Hyzer Tour…

We here at Spike Hyzer have come up with what we believe will be a very fun and rewarding disc golf mini tour that will be enjoyed by amateurs and professionals alike. While the tour is short, only three events, they are all “B Tier” events which means that there will be at least $500 in added cash for each of the three events. The way the cash will be divided up for the event is where things start to differ from your traditional PDGA events. Thirty percent of the added cash will be split up among the amateur divisions and the other 70% of the cash will be divided amongst the pro divisions. With this being said, it is sure to beef up the payout in all divisions. Another factor that will enhance the payout potential for these events is that there is not a players package for any of the three events. What this means is that nearly 100% of each amateur’s entry fee plus the added cash for the division will make for a sweet payout indeed! But wait, there’s more…

Here is where the deal starts to sweeten up! For those of you with the gumption to attend all three Spike Hyzer Developmental PDGA Tour events, you will be eligible to win the Lowest Score Challenge for your division. Currently the divisions that are eligible for the Spike Hyzer Tour are: Open, Open Master, Advanced, Advanced Master, Intermediate, Recreational Men and Recreational Women. What is the Lowest Score Challenge you ask? Well it just so happens I am prepared to tell you all about it. Your scores from all three events will be compared with the applicable scores from the competitors in your division. The person with the lowest score will win the Lowest Score Challenge for that division. The prizes will range from a $200 cash bonus to the winner of the open division and a $100 cash bonus to the open master division to Spike Hyzer Merchandise to the winners of the am divisions. In the case of a tie, a playoff shall commence on hole number 1 at OT Sloan in Sanford after the total scores are determined following the final round of the Sanford Slingers Spring Sling III.

So! Get your funds straight and pre-register for the Luther Britt Win or Swim II in Lumberton. Ed Lowe and crew have been hard at work once again getting local sponsorship and are well on their way to adding several hundred dollars to the payout. A payout which has a high potential of exceeding $1000 for the first event of the tour.

If you have any questions about the Spike Hyzer PDGA tour, or have interest in sponsoring the tour (which is a great way to promote your business at an economical price) contact me at:

We had a strong showing from Team Spike Hyzer at the 27th Pro Dogwood Crosstown this weekend! Justin Jernigan came in 2nd, just 2 strokes behind Cam Todd after shooting a HOT 45 in the final round at Zebulon. Terry Gallops also showed up big shooting an even HOTTER 44 to tie Geoff Bennett and world class player Brian Schweberger for 5th. WAY TO GO TEAM SPIKE HYZER!

Both members of Team Spike Hyzer started out the first round at Cedar Hills with a solid 49 allowing them both to go into the second round contending for the lead card. Justin followed up with a 50 still keeping his eye on the lead card and first place while Terry slipped a little by shooting a 52, but still leaving himself in cash contention. On the second day at Zebulon, JJ continued to keep the pressure on the top of the leader board by shooting a 48 in the third round. Terry still continued to struggle carding another 52, slipping a little more, but could still be in contention for cash if he could put together a good closing round. The fourth round is where both members of Team Spike Hyzer put it together. JJ kept the momentum rolling by shooting a 45 to close within 2 strokes of former world champ Cam Todd, taking sole possession of second place. As hot as JJ’s fourth round was, Terry’s was even hotter! Terry shot a weekend best 44 at Zebulon catapulting him up the leader board to tie him in 5th place with Brian Schweberger and Geoff Bennett, giving Team Spike Hyzer 2 of the top 5 finishing spots in the Pro Dogwood.

Way to go GUYS! We look forward to seeing more of your exploits in the future of professional disc golf!

The Spike Hyzer Developmental Tour has 3 “B tier” events in it’s inaugural year. We challenge you to join the first of many seasons with the Spike Hyzer team for what we believe will be an awesome contribution to the future of disc golf. While the details are still being hammered out in the Hyzer HQ, we do have a few tidbits of information to pass along…

The main focus of Spike Hyzer is to contribute to the growth of disc golf. We are tackling this goal by organizing sanctioned and unsanctioned disc golf tournaments that are fun and rewarding for amateurs and professionals alike. Our first step is the “Spike Hyzer Developmental PDGA Tour. There are 3 stops on the tour in NC this year. Each one will be a “B Tier” event with the added cash going to amateur and pro divisions alike. We have decided to eliminate the player’s package from our PDGA events, allowing us to add all of the applicable entry fees to the payout. The full allowed amount from the entry fees, added divisional cash and utilizing our huge inventory of golf discs, bags, baskets, apparel and other merchandise is sure to make the prize payout unique to the amateur divisions. Last but not least, there will be a points race for all eligible divisions. While we have yet to reach a decision on which divisions will be in the points series and what the reward will be for the winners, we are sure you will be pleased with the end result.

The schedule for the 2010 Spike Hyzer Developmental Tour is short but sweet in it’s opening year. The first event will be held in Lumberton, NC on May 22 & 23 at Luther Britt Park. The Luther Britt Win or Swim is entering it’s second year on the PDGA schedule and even though it is a new course in NC, it is quickly becoming known as one of the top notch courses in the state. Second on the tour is a new course to the PDGA scene, Tar River in Franklinton, NC on June 26 & 27. The Tar River Hoe Down is in it’s first year, but is sure to be a huge hit! Designed by Carlton Howard and know as the best “HomeGrown ” course in the state, we are sure you will be enthralled by it’s challenging but beautiful fairways. Last but not least is the Sanford Slingers Fall Fling III at OT Sloan Park in Sanford, NC. Slated on the tour one week after the USDGC on October 16 & 17. This short but challenging course will be the last event of the 2010 season with potential for an interesting turn of events. With this being the final event, the potential for a points race playoff will bring some drama to this short but sweet course.

Stay tuned for more info about how you can become a part of the Spike Hyzer Developmental Tour. Online registration for all 3 events is open. As a reward for those of you who preregister, your name will be entered into a drawing to win a “Cooler Competition Bag“. You will be allowed one entry for each tournament you preregister for. The drawing will be held after the last round at the Sanford Slingers Fall Fling. Sponsorship tiers are also being developed for those of you that have interest in sponsoring the tour and will be coming out soon.

If you would like to be added to my email list or have a course that you would like to become a part of the 2011 Spike Hyzer season, send an email to: chuckster@spikehyzer.com. Be the first in line to receive more exciting news about Spike Hyzer and it’s related activities!
